NB:
The production of €500 banknotes has stopped. Since 27 January 2019 Banco de Portugal(1) is no longer issuing €500 banknotes. However, the €500 banknote will remain legal tender and can therefore continue to be used without restrictions, including as a means of payment. As such, it is not necessary to exchange these banknotes, even after their issuance has stopped.
Should you still want to exchange a €500 banknote, you can do so at commercial bank and Banco de Portugal counters. No person/entity is authorised to withdraw banknotes on behalf of Banco de Portugal or any banking institution.
Banks (and other commercial agents) are also authorised to recirculate/deliver €500 banknotes to their customers.
The €500 banknote, like the other denominations of euro banknotes, will always retain its value and can be exchanged at the national central banks of the Eurosystem for an unlimited period of time.
(1) Similarly to other national central banks of the Eurosystem, excluding Deutsche Bundesbank and Oesterreichische Nationalbank, which issued €500 banknotes up to, and including, 26 April 2019.
