Acceptance as means of payment
Normal coins are legal tender throughout the euro area, which means that they must be accepted as means of payment at their full nominal value across all countries that have adopted the single currency regardless of the country that issued them.
The discharging power of normal coins is limited. This means that no party is obliged to accept more than 50 coins in any single payment, except for the State (via treasury offices), Banco de Portugal and credit institutions.
