In September 2018, public debt stood at €249.0 billion (Chart 1), a decrease of €0.3 billion from the end of August. This was essentially due to a €0.6 billion decrease in debt securities, partially offset by the increase in Treasury bonds and other general government deposits (Chart 2).

General government deposits rose by €0.9 billion, with public debt net of deposits decreasing by €1.2 billion from the previous month, to a total of €223.7 billion.
