Statistical Press Release – Public debt – January 2020

Today, Banco de Portugal publishes statistics, in Table A.15 of the Statistical Bulletin and in BPstat, on public debt for January 2020.

In January 2020 public debt stood at €252.1 billion (Chart 1), a €2.3 billion increase from the end of 2019. This was mainly driven by an increase in debt securities, partially offset by a decrease in Treasury certificates (Chart 2).

General government deposits rose by €2.9 billion, with public debt net of deposits decreasing by €0.5 billion from the previous month, to a total of €234.7 billion.
