Statistical Press Release – Non-financial sector indebtedness - March 2019
Today, Banco de Portugal publishes statistics, in Table A.20 of the Statistical Bulletin and in BPstat, on non-financial sector indebtedness for March 2019.
In March 2019 non-financial sector indebtedness stood at €724.4 billion, of which €323.3 billion referred to the public sector and €401.1 billion to the private sector.
Compared to February 2019, non-financial sector indebtedness went up by €1.4 billion. This was due to €0.9 billion and €0.5 billion increases in public sector indebtedness and private sector indebtedness respectively (Chart 1).
The increase in public sector indebtedness resulted mainly in an increase in financing from the non-resident sector by €1.4 billion, which was partly offset by a decline in financing granted by the financial sector and general government (Chart 2).
As regards the private sector, there was a €0.6 billion increase in the indebtedness of private corporations, mainly external. The indebtedness of private individuals decreased by €0.1 billion.
