Statistical Press Release – Non-financial sector indebtedness - January 2019

Today, Banco de Portugal publishes statistics, in Table A.20 of the Statistical Bulletin and in BPstat, on non-financial sector indebtedness for January 2019.

In January 2019 non-financial sector indebtedness stood at €720.0 billion, of which €320.8 billion referred to the public sector and €399.2 billion to the private sector.

Compared to December 2018, non-financial sector indebtedness went up by €3.9 billion. This was due to a €3.8 billion increase in public sector indebtedness and to a €0.2 billion increase in private sector indebtedness (Chart 1).

The increase in public sector indebtedness was due to a rise in financing granted by all creditor sectors other than the general government (Chart 2).

As regards private sector indebtedness, there was a €0.4 billion increase in the indebtedness of private corporations and a €0.2 billion decrease in the indebtedness of private individuals. By creditor sector, there was a rise in the external indebtedness of corporations and a decrease in financing obtained by corporations and private individuals from the financial sector.
