Statistical Press Release - Loans granted by the financial sector – March 2019
Today, Banco de Portugal publishes statistics, in Table A.11 of the Statistical Bulletin and in BPstat, on loans granted by the resident financial sector to non-financial corporations and households for March 2019.
Loans granted to non-financial corporations
In March 2019, the annual rate of change (a.r.) of loans granted to non-financial corporations was -1.0%. This represents an increase of 0.4 percentage points (p.p.) from the previous month (Chart 1).
Private exporting companies posted an a.r. of -3.0%, reflecting a 0.7 p.p. decrease from February.
The ratio of overdue loans of non-financial corporations stood at 8.9%, 0.2 p.p. less than in the previous month. The share of borrowers with overdue loans decreased by 0.4 p.p. from the previous month, to stand at 21.2%.
Loans granted to households
In March, the a.r. of loans granted to households remained unchanged from the previous month, at 0.5% (Chart 2). By segment, the a.r. of loans for consumption and other purposes decreased by 0.4 p.p., to 5.4%, while the a.r. of loans for house purchase (which accounts for 79% of loans granted to households) remained unchanged, at -0.8%.
As regards credit default indicators, the ratio of overdue loans to households was unchanged from February, at 3.3%. The share of borrowers with overdue loans decreased by 0.1 p.p. from the previous month, to 10.2%, mirroring the 0.1 p.p. reduction in the housing segment (to 3.9%).
