Statistical Press Release - Loans granted by the financial sector - December 2018
Today, Banco de Portugal publishes statistics, in Table A.11 of the Statistical Bulletin and in BPstat, on loans granted by the resident financial sector to non-financial corporations and households for December 2018.

Loans granted to non-financial corporations
In December 2018 the annual rate of change (a.r.) of loans granted to non-financial corporations was -1.0%. This represents a decrease of 0.4 percentage point (p.p.) from the previous month (Chart 1).
Private exporting companies recorded an a.r. of -0.5%, reflecting a -0.3 p.p. change from November.
The ratio of overdue loans of non-financial corporations stood at 9.4%, 1.8 p.p. less than in the previous month. The share of borrowers with overdue loans decreased by 1.5 p.p., to 21.1%.
These changes are largely explained by sales of credit portfolios in December, which affected both the a.r. and the default indicators.

Loans granted to households
The a.r. of loans granted to households stood at 0.5%, a 0.3 p.p. decrease from November (Chart 2). By purpose, the a.r. of loans for house purchase decreased by 0.2 p.p. compared with the previous month, standing at -1.0%. The a.r. of loans for consumption and other purposes decreased by 0.8 p.p. to 6.4%.
The ratio of overdue loans of households was 3.4%, 0.4 p.p. less than in the previous month. The share of borrowers with overdue loans was 10.1%, which corresponds to a 0.9 p.p. decrease.
Similarly to loans granted to non-financial corporations, loans granted to households were also affected by sales of credit portfolios during the month under review.
