Statistical Press Release – Investment funds - September 2020
At the end of September of 2020, the amount of shares/units (total net value) issued by investment funds reached €27.4 billion, i.e. €565 million more than in the second quarter of 2020 (Chart 1). This increase occurred for the second consecutive quarter, mainly reflecting new shares/units issued by bond funds, which posted a €290 million rise.
Growth in investment funds’ portfolio assets was justified by the higher investment in investment fund shares/units and debt securities.
Households remained the main investor sector in investment funds, holding around 48% of the total amount of shares/units issued. The third quarter of 2020 confirmed the trend observed since the beginning of 2019 (only interrupted in the first quarter of 2020) of increased household investment in shares/units. In the third quarter of 2020, the household portfolio increased by €576 million, thus contributing to a cumulative increase of about €2.4 billion since the beginning of 2019 (Chart 2).
