Statistical Press Release - Banking loans and deposits - May 2019
Today, Banco de Portugal publishes statistics, in Table A.9 of the Statistical Bulletin and in BPstat, on banking loans and deposits of non-financial corporations and households for May 2019.
Loans
In May 2019, loans granted by banks to non-financial corporations posted an annual rate of change (a.r.) of 0.7%, compared to -0.2% in April. The a.r. on loans to households (for house purchase) stood at -0.9%, corresponding to an increase of 0.1 percentage points (p.p.) from the previous month (Chart 1).
For the euro area as a whole, the a.r. on loans to non-financial corporations and households (for house purchase) stood at 2.7% and 3.4%, after standing at 2.8% and 3.5% respectively in April.
Household deposits
Household deposits with resident banks totalled €146.9 billion at the end of May 2019. The a.r. stood at 3.9%, remaining unchanged from April (Chart 2).
In the euro area, the a.r. on household deposits was 5.3% in May, compared to 5.1% in the previous month.
