Statistical Press Release – Banking loans and deposits – March 2020

Today, Banco de Portugal publishes statistics, in Table A.9 and in BPstat, on banking loans and deposits of non-financial corporations and households for March 2020.

Loans

In March 2020 loans granted by banks to non-financial corporations posted an annual rate of change (a.r.) of 1.7%, compared with 0.0% in February (Chart 1). Private exporting companies recorded an a.r. of 0.3%, a 0.5 percentage points (p.p.) increase from the previous month.

The a.r. on loans to households for house purchase stood at 1.3%, a 0.1 p.p. increase from the previous month (Chart 2). Loans to households for consumption posted an a.r. of 7.1 %, 1.2 p.p. less than in February (Chart 2).  

For the euro area as a whole, the a.r. on loans to non-financial corporations stood at 4.8%, a 2.4 p.p. increase from the previous month. The a.r. on loans to households for house purchase and consumption stood at 4.0% and 4.2%, compared to 4.3% and 6.1% respectively from February.

Household deposits

Household deposits with resident banks totalled €152.2 billion at the end of March. The a.r. stood at 5.0%, a 1.1 p.p. increase from February (Chart 3).

In the euro area, the a.r. on household deposits was 5.1% in March, down from 5.2% in the previous month.
