Statistical Press Release – Banking loans and deposits – January 2021
Today, Banco de Portugal publishes statistics on banking loans and deposits of non-financial corporations and households for January 2021, at data domain monetary and financial statistics.
Loans
In January 2021, loans granted by banks to non-financial corporations posted an annual rate of change (a.r.) of 9.9%, a 0.2 percentage points (p.p.) increase from the previous month. This evolution is mainly justified by micro and large enterprises, whose a.r. increased by 0.3 p.p. and 1.2 p.p., to stand at 14.3% and 5.0%, respectively.
The a.r. on loans to households for house purchase stood at 2.5%, a 0.2 p.p. increase from December. Loans to households for consumption posted an a.r. of - 0.5%, 1.0 p.p. less than in the previous month.
Deposits of households
Household deposits with resident banks reached the highest value to date, totalling €162.8 billion at the end of January. The a.r. stood at 7.8%, a 0.3 p.p. decrease from December.
