Statistical Press Release – Banking loans and deposits – January 2020
In January 2020 loans granted by banks to non-financial corporations posted an annual rate of change (a.r.) of 0.4%, unchanged from the previous month (Chart 1). Private exporting companies recorded an a.r. of -0.8%, compared with -1.3% in December.
The a.r. on loans to households for house purchase stood at 1.1%, a 0.1 percentage points (p.p.) increase from the previous month (Chart 2). Loans to households for consumption posted an a.r. of 8.3 %, i.e. above 7.7 %, as recorded in December (Chart 2).
For the euro area as a whole, the a.r. on loans to non-financial corporations stood at 2.6%, unchanged from December. The a.r. on loans to households for house purchase and consumption stood at 4.1% and 6.0%, compared to 3.9% and 6.1% respectively from December.
Household deposits with resident banks totalled €151.2 billion at the end of January. The a.r. stood at 4.2%, 0.5 p.p. more than in December (Chart 3).
In the euro area, the a.r. on household deposits was 5.2% in January, down from 5.3% in the previous month.
