Statistical Press Release - Banking loans and deposits - December 2018

Today, Banco de Portugal publishes statistics, in Table A.9 of the Statistical Bulletin and in BPstat, on banking loans and deposits of non-financial corporations and households for December 2018.

 

Loans

In December 2018, loans granted by banks to non-financial corporations posted an annual rate of change (a.r.) of 0.3%, compared to -0.3% in November. This indicator has not been positive since May 2011. The a.r. on loans to households (for house purchase) stood at -1.1%, corresponding to a decrease by 0.3 percentage point (p.p.) from the previous month (Chart 1).

For the euro area as a whole, the a.r. on loans to non-financial corporations and households (for house purchase) remained broadly unchanged at 2.8% and 3.3% respectively.

 

 

Household deposits

Household deposits with resident banks totalled €144.7 billion at the end of December 2018, reflecting an a.r. of 3.8%, corresponding, in value terms, to the highest annual change in the last seven years (€5.4 billion). This indicator increased by 1.2 p.p. compared to November (Chart 2).

In the euro area, the a.r. on household deposits was 4.3% in December, compared to 4.2% in November.
