Statement by Banco de Portugal on the death of former Vice-Governor António Marta
The Governor and Board of Directors of Banco de Portugal convey their deepest sympathy to the family of António Marta, former Vice-Governor, who passed away today.
An economist and manager by profession, António Marta was the last chairman of the European Integration Committee. During the VII Constitutional Government (1981), he was also deputy-chairman of the European Integration Committee and director-general of the Secretariat. In addition, he was a member of the group which prepared Portugal to join the European Union.
He joined the Board of Directors of Banco de Portugal in 1994 and retired in 2006.
In the early 1990s he was vice-president of Banco de Fomento Nacional, and worked for Banco de Comércio e Indústria.
At this moment of loss, the Governor and Board of Directors of Banco de Portugal express their condolences.
