Generation €uro Students' Award: Team 'Europolis' from D. Sancho II Secondary School (Elvas) wins final

The team 'Europolis' from D. Sancho II Secondary School (Elvas) won Portugal's Generation €uro Students' Award today. The final took place in Banco de Portugal, Lisbon, attended by the Governor of Banco de Portugal, Carlos da Silva Costa.

João Cortez, Gabriel Zuna, Jorge Reis, Nuno Palmeiro, Ricardo Semedo and their teacher Samuel Luís, from D. Sancho II Secondary School (Elvas), will go to Frankfurt am Main (Germany) in April to take part in the European prize-giving ceremony.

The Generation €uro Students' Award is the first competition for schools on monetary policy organised by the European Central Bank and the Eurosystem national central banks. This initiative aims to raise awareness among secondary school students about the importance of the single monetary policy and the objective of maintaining price stability.

The following teams took part in today's final:

  • Europolis - D. Sancho II Secondary School (Elvas) - 1st place
  • Pico €nergie - São Roque do Pico Primary and Secondary School (Pico) - 2nd place
  • Geração Empreendedora - Externato Marista de Lisboa (Lisbon) - 3rd place
  • Taxados - Colégio Campo de Flores (Caparica) - 4th place (tied)
  • Os Bosses da Geração - D. Sancho II Secondary School (Elvas) - 4th place (tied)

The jury for the final was chaired by the Vice-Governor of Banco de Portugal, José Berberan Ramalho, and comprised other members of staff of Banco de Portugal, the Executive Director of Diário Económico, Bruno Proença, and the economics editor of TVI, Paulo Almoster.

In November 2012, Banco de Portugal invited Portugal's secondary schools to take part in the Portuguese Generation €uro Students' Award. In the first phase, students answered a questionnaire on the euro's monetary policy.

The teams with the highest marks were then invited to write an essay, in which they had to predict the monetary policy decision of March 2013 by the Governing Council of the European Central Bank, giving relevant arguments.

Of the 16 teams invited to the second phase of the competition, 11 submitted essays. The best were chosen for the competition final, where they had to defend their arguments in front of the jury.
