Generation €uro Students' Award: São Lourenço Secondary School (Portalegre) wins final

A team from São Lourenço Secondary School (Portalegre) won Portugal's Generation €uro Students' Award today. The final took place in Banco de Portugal, Lisbon, attended by the Governor of Banco de Portugal, Carlos da Silva Costa.

Ana Real, Diogo Franco, Diogo Rota, João Parra, Raquel Sutil and their teacher Jorge Vilhais, from São Lourenço Secondary School, will go to Frankfurt am Main (Germany) in June to take part in the European prize-giving ceremony.

The Generation €uro Students' Award is the first competition for schools on monetary policy organised by the European Central Bank and the Eurosystem national central banks. This initiative aims to raise awareness among secondary school students about the importance of the single monetary policy and the objective of maintaining price stability.

In today's final, D. Sancho II Secondary School (Elvas) came second, with teams from Colégio Campo de Flores (Caparica) and Colégio Amor de Deus (Cascais) coming third and fourth respectively.

The jury for the final was chaired by the Vice-Governor of Banco de Portugal, José Berberan Ramalho, and comprised the Deputy Editor of Jornal de Negócios Helena Garrido and the economics editor of RTP Paulo Ferreira, as well as other Banco de Portugal representatives.

In October 2011, Banco de Portugal invited Portugal's secondary schools to take part in the Portuguese Generation €uro Students' Award. In the first phase, students answered a questionnaire on the euro's monetary policy. Of the 113 questionnaires sent in, 108 answered more than half the questions correctly.

The teams with the highest marks were then invited to write an essay, in which they had to predict the monetary policy decision of March 2012 by the Governing Council of the European Central Bank, giving relevant arguments.

Of the 18 teams invited to the second phase of the competition, 13 submitted essays. The best were chosen for the competition final, where they had to defend their arguments in front of the jury.
