The Banco de Portugal will put a commemorative coin into circulation from 4 January 2021, with face value of €2, entitled ‘Presidency of the EU Council’.

The coin will be distributed to the public through credit institutions and the Banco de Portugal's cash offices.

The ‘Presidency of the EU Council' coin has the following features:

On the common side: 

• The European design used on euro coins in circulation.

On the national side, filling the centre and surrounded by the twelve stars of the European Union:

• A map of connections, representing the connection between the Portuguese capital and the other European capitals;
• At the starting point of the connecting lines, the words ‘Presidency of the Council of the European Union Portugal 2021’;
• On the left, the words ‘Casa da Moeda’ and the name of the author.

The characteristics of this coin were approved by Executive Order No 265/2020, published in the Official Gazette, Series I - No 223 of 16 November 2020.

The issue limit was set at 500,000 coins with normal finish.
