Commemorative coin – ‘730th Anniversary of the University of Coimbra’ will start circulating on 1 September

The Banco de Portugal will put a commemorative coin into circulation from 1 September 2020, with face value of €2, entitled ‘730th Anniversary of the University of Coimbra’.

The coin will be distributed to the public through credit institutions and Banco de Portugal's cash offices.

The ‘730th Anniversary of the University of Coimbra” coin has the following features:

On the common side: 

  • The European design used on euro coins in circulation.

On the national side, surrounded by the twelve stars of the European Union:

  • An image of the Tower of the University of Coimbra;
  • A set of triangles arranged to represent the university’s rooftops, the highest being that of the Joanine Chapel, which have been inserted between the words ‘Universidade de Coimbra 730 Anos Portugal 2020’;
  • The name of the author and the words “Casa da Moeda”.

The characteristics of this coin were approved by Executive Order No 139/2020, published in the Official Gazette, Series I - No 112 of 9 June.

The issue limit was set at 350,000 coins with normal finish.


Note:

The Banco de Portugal sells commemorative coins to the public exclusively through its cash offices (normal finish only). 

Those interested in obtaining these coins should fill out the form provided giving the name, face value and number of coins desired. 

The Banco de Portugal does not reserve coins nor send them by post.
