Commemorative coin. ‘600th Anniversary of the Discovery of Madeira and Porto Santo’ will start circulating on 6 June
Banco de Portugal will put a commemorative coin into circulation from 6 June 2019, with face value of €2, entitled ‘600th Anniversary of the Discovery of Madeira and Porto Santo’.
The coin will be distributed to the public through credit institutions and Banco de Portugal's cash offices.
The ‘600th Anniversary of the Discovery of Madeira and Porto Santo’ coin has the following features:
On the common side:
- The European design used on euro coins in circulation.
On the national side, surrounded by the twelve stars of the European Union, a silhouette of the islands and around the edges:
- ‘600 anos do Descobrimento da Madeira e do Porto Santo’;
- ‘Portugal 2019’;
- ‘INCM’;
- The name of the author.
The characteristics of this coin were approved by Executive Order No 16/2019, published in the Official Gazette, Series I – No 10 of 15 January, and Rectification Declaration No 5/2019, published in the Official Gazette, Series I – No 31 of 13 February. The issue limit was set at 500,000 coins with normal finish.

Banco de Portugal sells commemorative coins to the public exclusively through its cash offices (normal finish only).
Those interested in obtaining these coins should fill out the form provided giving the name, face value and number of coins desired.
Banco de Portugal does not reserve coins nor send them by post.
