"José Malhoa" and "Jogos Olímpicos de Londres 2012" ("London 2012 Olympic Games")

Banco de Portugal will put two cupro-nickel-alloy collector coins into circulation from 20 July 2012, each with face value of €2.50::

  • The 'José Malhoa' coin, part of the 'Europa – Artistas Europeus' ('Europe – European Artists') series
     
  • The 'Jogos Olímpicos de Londres 2012' ('London 2012 Olympic Games') coin

The coins are distributed to the public through credit institutions and at Banco de Portugal's cash offices.
 

 
The coin 'José Malhoa' shows the following:

  • On the obverse:
    • The painter's work 'O Ateliê do Artista' ('The Artist's Studio')
    • The Portuguese coat of arms
    • The face value, "2,50 euro"
    • The words "República Portuguesa 2012"
        
  • On the reverse:
    • The figure of the painter José Malhoa, represented on a plain, with painting material in his left hand
    • The inscription “José Malhoa”, “1855-1933”, “Pintores Europeus” ('European Painters') and the  'Europa' series logo, surrounding the composition

  

 
The coin 'Jogos Olímpicos de Londres 2012' shows the following:

  • On the obverse:
    • An olive branch with geometric leaves, establishing a relationship with the design on the coin's reverse
    • The word "Portugal"
    • The Portuguese coat of arms
    • The year
    • The face value, "2,50 euro
       
  • On the reverse:
    • The logo of the Portuguese Olympic Committee
    • An allusion to the sport of judo
    • A stylised design of a fragment of the building "30 St. Mary Axe”, in the City of London, a notable example of the city's modern architecture
    • The words “Jogos Olímpicos de Londres” ("London Olympic Games")

The characteristics of these coins were approved by Executive Order No 179/2012, published in the Official Gazette, Series I – No 108 of 4 June 2012.

The issue limit was set at 100,000 coins for 'José Malhoa' and 300,000 for 'Jogos Olímpicos de Londres 2012' with normal finish, in cupro-nickel alloy.
