Collector coins. ‘Iberian wolf’ and ‘Tuberaria major’ will start circulating on 29 May
Banco de Portugal will put two collector coins into circulation from 29 May 2019, which will only be legal tender in Portugal:
- A cupronickel-alloy coin, with face value of €5, entitled ‘Iberian wolf’, within the ‘Endangered fauna species’ series.
- A cupronickel-alloy coin, with face value of €5, entitled ‘Tuberaria major’, within the ‘Endangered flora species’ series.
The coins will be distributed to the public through credit institutions and Banco de Portugal's cash offices.

The ‘Iberian wolf’ coin, with an issue limit set at 40,000 coins with normal finish, has the following features:
On the obverse:
- An image of a female feeding her cubs, symbolising the nurturing side of a wolf’s life, and:
- In the upper right quadrant, the Portuguese coat of arms and the face value;
- Around the upper edge, and to the right, the words ‘Portugal 2019’, the abbreviation ‘INCM’ and the name of the author.
On the reverse:
- Filling the centre, a close-up of a wolf’s head, surrounded, around the upper edge and to the right, by the words ‘Lobo-ibérico’ and ‘Canis lupus’.

The ‘Tuberaria major’ coin, also with an issue limit set at 40,000 coins with normal finish, has the following features:
On the obverse:
- An image of a cluster of Tuberaria major flowers, buds and leaves, and:
- Around the left edge, the words ‘Portugal 2019’;
- On the right, the face value and the Portuguese coat of arms.
On the reverse:
- In the middle, an open flower, surrounded by other flowers and plants, framed by the words:
- In the upper left quadrant, ‘alcar-do-algarve’ and ‘Tuberaria major Willk’;
- In the lower right quadrant, the name of the author and the abbreviation ‘INCM’.
The characteristics of these coins were approved by Executive Order No 15/2019, published in the Official Gazette, Series I – No 10 of 15 January 2019.
Note:
Banco de Portugal sells commemorative and collector coins to the public exclusively through its cash offices (normal finish only).
Those interested in obtaining these coins should fill out the form provided giving the name, face value and number of coins desired.
Banco de Portugal does not reserve coins nor send them by post.
