Collector coins ‘Gonçalo Byrne’ and ‘Gothic’ will start circulating on 2 December
The Banco de Portugal will put two collector coins into circulation from 2 December 2020, which will only be legal tender in Portugal:
- A silver-alloy coin, with face value of €7.50, entitled ‘Gonçalo Byrne’, within the 'Portuguese Architecture' series.
- A cupronickel-alloy coin, with face value of €5, entitled ‘Gothic’, within the ‘Europa’ series.
The coins will be distributed to the public through credit institutions and the Banco de Portugal's cash offices.

The ‘Gonçalo Byrne’ coin, with an issue limit set at 20,000 coins with normal finish, has the following features:
On the obverse:
- An elevation view of the traffic control tower in the port of Lisbon;
- In the middle, the Portuguese coat of arms, the face value and the word ‘Portugal’.
On the reverse:
- An image of the other two of the tower’s elevations, one shown as a sectional drawing;
- Around the upper edge, the words ‘Arquiteto Gonçalo Byrne’;
- At the bottom, the year ‘2020’;
- Around the edge, on the lower left, the name of the author and the words ‘Casa da Moeda’.

The ‘Gothic’ coin, with an issue limit set at 20,000 coins with normal finish, has the following features:
On the obverse:
- An image of gothic arches;
- In the middle, twelve stars and an incomplete circle;
- At the top, the symbol of the Europa series;
- On the right, the Portuguese coat of arms.
On the reverse:
- An image of gothic arches and the words ‘Casa da Moeda’ and the name of the author on the left;
- At the top, the words ‘Portugal 2020 Gótico 5 Euro’.
The characteristics of these coins were approved by Executive Order No 138/2020, published in the Official Gazette, Series I - No 112 of 9 June 2020.
Note:
The Banco de Portugal sells collector coins to the public exclusively through its cash offices (normal finish only).
The Banco de Portugal does not reserve coins nor send them by post.
