Collector coins. ‘The Departure 1519’ and ‘45th Anniversary of the Carnation Revolution’ will start circulating on 17 April 2019

Banco de Portugal will put two collector coins into circulation from 17 April 2019, which will only be legal tender in Portugal:

  • A silver-alloy coin, with face value of €7.50, entitled ’The Departure 1519’, within the ‘500th Anniversary of Magellan’s Circumnavigation’ commemorative series.
  • A cupronickel-alloy coin, with face value of €5, entitled ‘45th Anniversary of the Carnation Revolution’.

The coins will be distributed to the public through credit institutions and Banco de Portugal's cash offices.

A moeda "Partida 1519"

‘The Departure 1519’ coin, with an issue limit set at 50,000 coins with normal finish, has the following features:

On the obverse: 

  • In the middle, an image depicting the fleet commanded by Ferdinand Magellan, symbolising the departure for the circumnavigation of the globe, from 1519 to 1522;
  • Surrounding the design, the words ‘2019 Portugal’, ‘Circum Navegação’ and ‘1519-1522’;
  • In the lower left quadrant, the face value.

On the reverse: 

  • In the middle, the portrait of Ferdinand Magellan;
  • On the left, the image of a ship;
  • Around the upper edge, the words ‘Fernão.de.Magalhães’;
  • Around the lower edge, the abbreviation ‘INCM’, the name of the author and ‘Partida 1519’. 
A moeda "25 de Abril – 45 anos"

The ‘45th Anniversary of the Carnation Revolution’ coin, with an issue limit set at 40,000 coins with normal finish, has the following features:

On the obverse: 

  • Three off-centre circular fields alluding to the movement that brought down the dictatorship and restored freedom on 25 April 1974, containing:
  • In the middle, the face value and an image of five escutcheons with five bezants each;
  • At the top, the word ‘Portugal’;
  • At the bottom, the abbreviation ‘INCM’, the word ‘€uro’ and the name of the author.

On the reverse: 

  • The same off-centre circular fields of the obverse, containing:
  • In the middle, the depiction of a carnation whose leaves form the words ‘25 de abril’;
  • At the top, the words ‘1974, ‘45 anos’ and ‘2019’;
  • At the bottom, the words ‘Liberdade’ and ‘Democracia’.

 

The characteristics of these coins were approved by Executive Orders No 13/2019 and 14/2019 respectively, published in the Official Gazette, Series I – No 10 of 15 January 2019.


Note:

Banco de Portugal sells commemorative and collector coins to the public exclusively through its cash offices (normal finish only). 

Those interested in obtaining these coins should fill out the form provided giving the name, face value and number of coins desired. 

Banco de Portugal does not reserve coins nor send them by post.
