Collector coin – ‘Baroque’ in the Europa series

Banco de Portugal will put a cupronickel-alloy collector coin into circulation from 26 April 2018, with face value of €5, called ‘Baroque’.

The coins will be distributed to the public through credit institutions and Banco de Portugal's cash offices.

The ‘Baroque’ coin is only legal tender in Portugal and has the following features:

On the obverse:

  • In the background, the European star;
  • In the middle, the Portuguese coat of arms and a motif with curves and counter-curves characteristic of the Baroque style;
  • Around the edge, the word ‘Portugal’ and the year of issue ‘2018’;
  • At the bottom, the symbol of the Europa series, the abbreviation ‘INCM’ and the name of the author.

On the reverse

  • At the top and on the left, a number of elements identifying the Baroque style through figures with curves and counter-curves and a spiral effect;
  • On the right, the image of a cherub as a spiritual element and the face value;
  • At the bottom, the words ‘O Barroco’ (Baroque) above a shell filled with precious stones, reflecting the antagonism between the religious and the profane.

The characteristics of this coin were approved by Executive Order No 68/2018, published in the Official Gazette, Series I – No 48 of 8 March 2018.

The issue limit was set at 60,000 coins with normal finish.
