Banco de Portugal will put three collector coins into circulation: ‘Siza Vieira’, ‘Maravilhas da Natureza – Madeira’ and ‘100 anos das Aparições de Fátima’

Banco de Portugal will put three collector coins into circulation from 5 May 2017, which are only legal tender in Portugal:

  • a silver-alloy coin, with face value of €7.50, entitled ‘Siza Vieira’, within the ‘Portuguese Architecture’ series;
  • a silver-alloy coin, with face value of €7.50, entitled ‘Maravilhas da Natureza – Madeira’ (Wonders of Nature – Madeira), within the ‘Ibero-American’ series;
  • a cupronickel-alloy coin, with face value of €2.50, entitled ‘100 anos das Aparições de Fátima’ (100 years of the Marian apparitions of Fátima).

The coins will be distributed to the public through credit institutions and Banco de Portugal's cash offices.

 
The ‘Siza Vieira’ coin, with an issue limit of 60,000 coins with normal finish, has the following features:

On the obverse: 

  • The main facade and the entrance of Santa Maria church in Marco de Canavezes, designed by the architect Álvaro Siza Vieira;
  • The words ‘Arquiteto Álvaro Siza’ and the Portuguese coat of arms.

On the reverse: 

  • The rear of the church;
  • At the top, the words ‘República Portuguesa 2017’ and the face value; 
  • At the bottom, the word ‘INCM’ and the name of the author.

 
The ‘Maravilhas da Natureza – Madeira’ coin, with an issue limit of 60,000 coins, with normal finish, has the following features:

On the obverse: 

  • In the middle, the Portuguese coat of arms, framed by the word ‘Portugal’ and the face value; 
  • Around the edge, the coats of arms of the countries participating in the series.

On the reverse: 

  • An arrangement of four geraniums, with one flower standing out as the main element;
  • In the background, the coastline of the island, with a glimpse of an undulating sea and cloudy sky, and, on the horizon, the Island of Porto Santo; 
  • Around the upper edge, the words ‘Maravilhas da Natureza’; 
  • Around the lower edge, the name of the author and the words ‘Madeira 2017’.

 
The ‘100 anos das Aparições de Fátima’ coin, with an issue limit of 150,000 coins, with normal finish, has the following features:

On the obverse: 

  • In the middle, a stylised representation of the Portuguese coat of arms, with the word ‘Portugal’ around the top edge;
  • Around the lower edge, the word ‘INCM’ and the face value.

On the reverse: 

  • An image of the Virgin Mary, as designed by José Thedim, with the rosary, the holm oak tree and the crown, with the name of the author at the bottom;
  • On the upper edge, the words ‘1917-Aparições de N.ª S.ª de Fátima-2017’.

 
The characteristics of these coins were approved by Executive Order No 148/2017, published in the Official Gazette, Series I – No 83 of 28 April. 


Note:

Banco de Portugal sells commemorative and collector coins to the public exclusively through its cash offices (normal finish only). 

Those interested in obtaining these coins should fill out the form provided giving the face value and number of coins desired. 

Banco de Portugal does not reserve coins nor send them by post.
