Banco de Portugal launches daily economic indicator
The new indicator will make it possible to more easily identify abrupt changes to economic activity. It will be released every Thursday on a weekly basis.
The disruption caused to the global economy by the COVID-19 pandemic intensified the need to use high-frequency data to capture very short-term economic developments. In this context, and to provide the public with yet another instrument for monitoring the Portuguese economy, the Banco de Portugal launches today a daily economic indicator (DEI).
The DEI condenses a series of quantitative daily information: road traffic of heavy commercial vehicles on motorways, electricity and natural gas consumption, cargo and mail landed at national airports, and card-based payments in Portugal by residents and non-residents.
It will be released every Thursday on a weekly basis, with the preceding Sunday as cut-off date.
