The time limit for exchanging 500 escudo banknotes (plate 12), featuring the portrait of Mouzinho da Silveira, will expire on 1 May 2018.

500 escudo banknotes (plate 12) may be exchanged for euro at Banco de Portugal’s cash offices – in Braga, Castelo Branco, Coimbra, Évora, Faro, Funchal, Lisbon, Ponta Delgada, Porto and Viseu – until 30 April 2018 (the last business day before the expiry date).

If you are unable to exchange money in person, you may send it to Banco de Portugal by registered mail, stating the amount, to the following address:

Those sending money by mail to be exchanged must comply with the following requirements:

1. Banknotes/coins must be secured in a sealed envelope marked ‘Contém numerário’ (contains cash), stating the amount of cash within, to be placed inside a second envelope;
2. The sender must be identified (name, address, telephone number and/or e-mail address) and must provide the details required for the bank transfer (IBAN, for bank accounts domiciled in Portugal, or SWIFT CODE and any other bank details needed, for bank accounts domiciled abroad).

Six escudo banknotes may still be exchanged for euro

Escudo banknotes may be exchanged for euro at Banco de Portugal’s cash offices within 20 (twenty) years of the withdrawal from circulation of the respective plate. Escudo coins may no longer be exchanged for euro.
