Exchange of escudo banknotes

Unlike the metal escudo coins whose exchange limit ended on 31 December 2002, escudo banknotes may be exchanged for euro banknotes and/or coins at Banco de Portugal cash offices, up to twenty years after withdrawal from circulation.

For this operation, the currency requisition form should be filled in by the applicant (see associated documents), in which the sum and denomination of the escudo banknotes submitted are specified, as are also the amounts of euro banknotes and/or coins requested in exchange.

A valid escudo banknote that is damaged or mutilated may be exchanged for euro banknote(s) and/or coin(s) in the following situations:

• When entire or fragmented which, when joined together, forms the exact and unequivocal same banknote;  
• When incomplete, it presents a fragment with at least 75% of the total area and includes the right or left half; 
• When incomplete and fragmented which, when joined together, makes up, at the least, the area referred to in the aforementioned point.
