Euro banknote and coin exchange

With a view to enabling the adequacy of cash supply and demand, to guaranteeing efficient circulation and to minimising the risk of a shortage in some banknote and metal coin denominations in national territory, Banco de Portugal has made the desired denominations and quantities of banknotes and/or metal coins available to the public at its cash offices.

The conditions are as follows:

• Whenever a high amount of banknotes is exchanged, they should be grouped according to denomination and, preferably, faced and oriented, i.e. with heads upwards and all following suit; 
• Whenever coins are exchanged, they should be separated according to denomination;
• The currency requisition form should be filled in by the applicant (see associated documents), in which the sum and denomination of the submitted escudo banknotes and/or coins are specified, as are also the amounts requested in exchange.
