Banknote Production

There have been significant developments since the first banknotes were issued by Banco de Lisboa in 1822. Banknotes in circulation today are substantially different, namely in terms of their design and the type of production techniques employed.
This part of the exhibition illustrates the different phases in the life of a banknote, ranging from its artistic design to its printing, and displays different materials and machines used in the production of some of the banknotes issued by Banco de Portugal between 1940 and 1980, as well as of a 5,000 escudo banknote (plate 1), ordered in 1941 and destroyed in 1974 that was never put into circulation.
