Enterprise and Sector Table

The Sector Table (Portuguese acronym: QS) contains a number of annual indicators for sector of economic activity / size classes of non-financial corporations’ from the Central Balance-Sheet Database. The main data sources are the annexes A and R of IES – Simplified Corporate Information, with the basic accounting information reported by the enterprises being subjected to statistical quality control performed by the Central Balance-Sheet Office.

With the release of 2010 companies’ data, revised Enterprise and Sector tables are also published. These tables include a redesigned model, which mainly aims to accommodate the changes arising from the implementation of new accounting standards in 2010. Additionally, this new version incorporates a number of suggestions presented by enterprises and statistical users in the satisfaction survey launched with the publication of the Enterprise and Sector tables in 2009.

The Sector Tables are integrated in the multidimensional component of BPstat | Statistics online since December 2009. Results are shown for four separate entries:

  • Until 2005, results were calculated from responses by enterprises to the Central Balance-Sheet Database annual survey;
  • From 2006 to 2009, results were calculated on the basis of the reporting of Annex A of the IES;
  • From 2010 onwards, results are calculated from annexes A and R of the IES which are reported according to the applicable accounting standards in 2010; and
  • European Sectoral Ratios, extracted from the international database BACH-ESD (Bank for the Accounts of Companies Harmonised - European Sectoral references Database).
Besides the sectoral aggregates published in the multidimensional analysis of BP stat | Statistics online, the Central Balance Sheet Office also sends to each company an Enterprise and Sector Table (Portuguese acronym: QES) containing data about the company and its sector of economic activity / size class as well as a set of European ratios for the activity sector on which the company operates. The new version of the Enterprise and Sector Table for 2010 also includes 2009 data.

The Enterprise and Sector Table of a given year are usually sent to each company during the fourth quarter of the following year. For this purpose, the electronic address registered in the IES database is used, which corresponds to that of the dispatcher of the company’s declaration, duly certified in the Ministry of Finance. Nevertheless, companies can request their Enterprise and Sector Table to the following email address: ies@bportugal.pt.

The Enterprise and Sector Tables are computed by Banco de Portugal according to a specific methodology, which is described in the following publications:

  • Central Balance-Sheet Studies | 1, November 2010 – Enterprise and Sector Tables, for data until 2009; and
  • Central Balance-Sheet Studies | 6, december 2011 – New Enterprise and Sector Tables, Adapting the Accounting Normalization System, for data as from 2010 onwards.
*The QES is calculated assuming the submission of annexes A and R of IES and the fulfilment of the quality requirements set out by Banco de Portugal. Non-compliance with such requirements by any enterprise makes it impossible to calculate and send its QES.
