Historical archive of the Banco de Portugal
The historical archive of the Banco de Portugal holds an extensive collection of 19th and 20th century documents, coming from the Bank itself (Head Office, Oporto Branch and Agencies), its predecessor, the Banco de Lisboa, the financial companies created with the capital of the Banco de Lisboa and Societies liquidated by the Banco de Portugal. Existing documentation reflects the multiple activities that such institutions developed during their life span and serve as proof of their acts.
Its collection is made up of the following documental archives:
Banco de Lisboa (1821-1846)
Banco de Portugal (1846- )
Companhia Auxiliar (1844-1845)
Companhia Confiança (1838-1845)
Companhia Confiança Nacional (1844-1846)
Companhia de Crédito Nacional (1842-1844)
Companhia União (1843-1845)
Companhia das Obras Públicas de Portugal (1845-1855)
Sociedade Geral Agrícola e Financeira de Portugal (1873-1897)
There is also a small collection of sundry documents related to several aspects of Portuguese banking in the late 18th century and early 19th century.
A gathering of drawings, plans and photographs of Banco de Portugal buildings and events are also part of its collection.
The Historical archive has a reading room open to the public where the access to documents is allowed, however, prior contact is recommended.
