The book ‘Promoting Excellence in European Statistics’ celebrates 20 years of the Committee on Monetary, Financial and Balance of Payments Statistics (CMFB). The CMFB is the principal forum for co-ordinating work in statistics among the National Statistical Institutes and Eurostat, on the one hand, and the National Central Banks and the European Central Bank, on the other.
This European committee was created in 1991 by decision of the Council, with the aim of supporting the European Commission in designing and implementing the work programmes in the fields of monetary, financial and balance of payments statistics. The committee is made up of representatives of the National Statistical Institutes and the National Central Banks, the European Commission and the European Central Bank.
‘Promoting Excellence in European Statistics’ is divided into two sections. The first one focuses on the history of the CMFB and is mostly based on contributions from the CMFB ex-Chairmen. The second section addresses the CMFB initiatives to meet new challenges and encompasses several themes, such as cooperation, the new international guidelines, revision policies, the advisory role of the CMFB in relation to the Excessive Deficit Procedure (EDP), communication and statistical literacy and strategic priorities.
The CMFB has performed an important role in advising on issues relating to public finance statistics (budget deficit and public debt), in particular in relation to decisions in the area of Excessive Deficit Procedure.

Uma Elite Financeira

Jaime Reis

This publication gathers the biographies of all the 190 leading figures who were members of the management of Banco de Portugal from 1846 to 1914. It is targeted at experts or merely interested readers. The biographies gathered here are often rather surprising. In addition to the naturally expected financial and business expertise, it covers some adventurous episodes and reveals personalities with unsuspected and unexpected success in a number of areas, such as the artistic, social, political, cultural, military or charity fields.

History of the Portuguese Banking System - Volume II
Nuno Valério (coordination)

This second volume of the History of the Portuguese Banking System is a follow-up  of the study made in the first volume and describes the evolution from the Bank of Portugal’s assumption of the role of a central bank, on 1 July 1931, to the launch of the European Monetary Union on 1 January 1999.
As in the first volume, an attempt has been made to provide a broad outline of each period, highlighting the main features to be noted in the evolution of banking at both a world level and a European level, presenting the political, economic and monetary framework governing the evolution of the Portuguese banking system, analysing the main facts of this evolution and discussing the relationship established between the banking system and the Portuguese economy and society in general.

The findings broadly confirm the views expressed in the Bank’s publications over the past few years as regards the adjustment of the Portuguese economy to the shock from the integration in the European Monetary Union, which introduced a new economic policy regime in the country.
