Welcome to Banco de Portugal’s new website

Nearly twelve years after launching its first website, Banco de Portugal now provides its visitors with new contents and functionalities and a different, more modern and dynamic graphic layout, in an easier-to-browse format and making use of the latest technology tools.

However, the Bank’s purpose has not changed. Today, we reiterate that Bank’s main objective is to give the public "an enhanced, concise and accurate insight into Banco de Portugal’s mission, tasks, policies and international environment". Moreover:

"Banco de Portugal thus responds to society’s natural desire towards a more transparent and regularly accountable central bank. Indeed, this stems from the growing autonomy conferred upon Banco de Portugal (an integral part of the European System of Central Banks (ESCB)) in fundamental domains such as monetary policy, supervision and payment systems".

It is our hope that this goal will continue to be fulfilled in the future.

 

The Bank’s website was renovated in tandem with the Bank Customer Website, which will also display a new layout, contents and services. The Bank Customer Website is an increasingly crucial tool for all customers that use financial products and services.

Visitors are invited to send suggestions and report any errors on this website.

This work presents one of the most valuable treasures of the library of Banco de Portugal, namely its collection of eleven new royal charters (forais novos) granted during the Reign of King Dom Manuel.

The study of these documents, carried out by José Manuel Garcia, an expert in Portuguese Discoveries and Expansion history, reflects the importance of the most relevant grounding reforms undertaken by Dom Manuel, which are presented here in a clear and profusely illustrated manner.
