European Central Bank

The European Central Bank (ECB) was established on 1 June 1998 by the Treaty on European Union. The Treaty of Lisbon established the ECB as an EU institution. The ECB has legal personality, performing the objectives and tasks entrusted to the European System of Central Banks.

The national central banks are the sole subscribers to and holders of the capital of the ECB, in accordance with the provisions laid down in the Statute of the European System of Central Banks and of the European Central Bank.

The ECB has its headquarters in Frankfurt am Main, Germany.
