José António da Silveira Godinho

Member of the Board of Directors of Banco de Portugal. Born in 1943. Graduated in Finance from the Instituto Superior de Ciências Económicas e Financeiras (Faculty of Economics and Finance) in 1965.

Assistant lecturer on Public Finance and Mathematics at the Instituto Superior de Ciências Económicas e Financeiras from 1967 to 1977.

Before being appointed Member of the Board of Directors of Banco de Portugal, he was a Member of the Management Board of Espírito Santo Companhia de Seguros, S.A (insurance company) and AdvanceCare – Gestão de Serviços de Saúde, S.A. (health care management services company).

He was ambassador and permanent representative of Portugal to the OECD (1993-1996). He held several government positions: Minister of Internal Administration in the 11th Constitutional Government (1987-1990), Deputy Minister of National Defence in the 10th Constitutional Government (1986-1987), Secretary of State for Finance in the 7th Constitutional Government (1981) and Deputy Minister of Finance and of the Plan in the 6th Constitutional Government (1980).

He was a Member of the Management Council of Banco Pinto & Sotto Mayor (1979 and 1981-1982) and of the Management Board of Banco Espírito Santo e Comercial de Lisboa (1982-1986, 1990-1993).

Mr. Silveira Godinho was Head of Department at Banco de Portugal from 1975 to 1979. He was appointed Member of the Board of Directors in May 2004 and he is now in his second term, following reappointment in May 2009.
