International organisations

The developments in the Portuguese, euro area and European Union economies are crucially affected by the global economic and financial system. Banco de Portugal monitors the main developments in the international economy and financial system and prepares, in line with its competences and tasks, the participation in several international organisations.

As an EU Member State, Portugal is represented in a number of European bodies and institutions. Banco de Portugal participates in the activities of the working groups that fall within its fields of competence and monitors developments in its relevant business areas.

With regard to international organisations, Portugal’s relations with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) are of great importance for the Bank’s international activity, as Banco de Portugal is the fiscal agent with the IMF on behalf of Portugal. The Bank also monitors the main subjects under discussion at the World Bank, namely concerning issues of interest for its activities. A delegation of the Bank takes part in the Annual and Spring Meetings of the Bretton Woods institutions.

Banco de Portugal is represented in OECD committees and working groups on matters falling within its fields of competence. It is part of the national delegations of a number of committees. Moreover, Banco de Portugal is a shareholder of the Bank for International Settlements (BIS).

Within the scope of its international activities, the Bank also follows the main developments discussed by other informal fora, notably G7/G8 and G20.
