Collector coin – "Landscape of the Pico Island vineyard culture"
On 27 October 2011 Banco de Portugal will put into circulation a collector coin with a face value of €2.50, integrated in the series dedicated to world heritage classified by UNESCO in Portugal.
This coin is designated «Landscape of the Pico Island vineyard culture» and is legal tender only in Portugal. It will be distributed to the public through credit institutions and at Banco de Portugal’s cash offices.

The obverse of the coin shows a grape vine shot emerging from volcanic rock, the face value, the national coat of arms and the inscription República Portuguesa.
The reverse shows the partly clouded volcanic cone of Pico Island, a composition representing “curraletas” (rectangular plots of land bounded by stone walls where vines grow), a vine leaf standing out in the centre of the field, the inscriptions UNESCO, Açores and Vinhas da Ilha do Pico, and the World Heritage logo.
The characteristics of these coins were approved by Executive Order No 188/2011, published in the Official Gazette, Series I, No 89 of 9 May 2011. Imprensa Nacional - Casa da Moeda, S.A. (Portuguese Mint) has been authorised to issue up to 100,000 coins with normal finishing, in cupro-nickel alloy.

Banco de Portugal sells to the public, exclusively at its cash offices, commemorative and collector coins (normal finishing only).
Interested parties must fill in an appropriate form, providing their identification as well as the name, face value and quantity of commemorative/collector coins required.
Banco de Portugal does not accept coin reservations, and does not send coins by postal mail.
