Counterfeit euro banknotes in Portugal in 2006
In Portugal, a total of 7,610 counterfeit euro banknotes were withdrawn from circulation in 2006 (see table below). This figure represents a significant decrease in comparison with the past years, confirming a trend reduction – around 50% compared with 2004.

Counterfeit banknotes that have been detected can be identified by the public without any specific equipment, as the authenticity of a banknote can be easily checked by using the FEEL-LOOK-TILT test described in the Eurosystem’s official publications and on the websites of the ECB and Banco de Portugal.
