Commemorative coins

These coins commemorate events, anniversaries or national and international personalities of the highest relevance.
Each Member State of the Eurosystem can issue a €2 commemorative coin once a year. These coins have the same common side as normal €2 coins and a national side with a commemorative design.
The very first coin of its kind was issued in 2004 by Greece to commemorate the Olympic Games in Athens.
In Portugal, the first commemorative coin was issued in 2007 to commemorate the Portuguese Presidency of the European Union (see photo).
