Second series of euro banknotes
In April 2005 the Governing Council approved the project for the introduction of the second series of euro banknotes (ES2). This project is intended to put into circulation a new series of euro banknotes, with improved and more counterfeit-resistant security features, which will make the euro banknotes even safer. The new series also aims at an improved durability of euro banknotes.
The design of the new banknotes will continue to be based on the “ages and styles” theme of the current series. In a spirit of continuity with the previous series, the maintenance of this theme will make it possible for the new banknotes to be easily recognised by the public as euro banknotes. However, the inclusion of new design and security features will make it easier to tell apart the two series.
The new series of euro banknotes shall be gradually launched over several years.
Banco de Portugal has participated in the development of this project, through various technical working groups at the Eurosystem level, under the guidance of the European Central Bank.
