This Supplement collects a number of technical papers prepared by the Statistics Department of Banco de Portugal and recently featured in various national and international fora.
The selected papers reflect the diversity of the statistics currently under the responsibility of the Statistics Department. The papers are grouped into six broad categories, in line with the main focus in each of them: institutional subject matters, statistical systems, methodological issues, micro-databases, compilation of balance of payment statistics and securitisation.

This publication covers the papers that were presented by Banco de Portugal representatives at the 57th Session of the International Statistical Institute, held in Durban, South Africa, 16 – 22 August 2009.
Included in sessions mainly devoted to central banks’ activities, the papers cover the following issues: institutional cooperation in the development of statistical systems, the evolution of financial services in Portugal, dealing with information gaps in financial statistics, and public expenditure composition and economic growth.

This Supplement contains a presentation of the Sistema Integrado de Estatísticas de Títulos – SIET (Securities Statistics Integrated System), a brief description of the concepts and definitions underlying the compilation of the securities statistics and a summarised analysis of some of the major results of domestic securities issues statistics.

Supplement 1/2008 describes the main features and the key factors for the success of the Simplified Corporate Information (IES, in the Portuguese acronym) and illustrates some effects of the inclusion of IES in the Statistics on Non-Financial Corporations from the Central Balance-Sheet Database published in the Statistical Bulletin of the Banco de Portugal (Chapter G).

This publication covers the papers that were presented by Banco de Portugal representatives at the 56th Session of the International Statistical Institute, held in Lisbon, 22 – 29 August 2007. Established in 1885, the International Statistical Institute (ISI) is one of the oldest scientific associations operating in the modern world, with more than 2,000 individual elected members, representing more than 133 countries worldwide.
In line with the main theme, the papers are grouped in the following sections: institutional and organisational framework; monetary and financial statistics; balance of payments statistics; financial accounts; securities statistics; non-financial corporations’ statistics; other issues.

Supplement 5/2005 provides information that is useful for an understanding of the statistical series included in Chapter G of the Statistical Bulletin under the heading “Statistics on Non-Financial Corporations from the Central Balance-Sheet Database”. The Supplement encompasses descriptions of the methodology used to calculate the indicators, the content of the tables and the main features of the primary information underlying the data.

Following the beginning of the publication of seasonally adjusted balance of payments series, this Supplement presents the methodology applied and the main results achieved.

Following the publication in June 2005 by the Banco de Portugal of a new set of statistics, covering financial transactions in the Portuguese economy,  the Banco de Portugal began to regularly release as of November 2005 information on financial stocks, detailing end of period data on financial assets and liabilities. This Supplement presents the evolution of financial assets and liabilities covering the period 1999-2004.

Statistics relating to Financial Accounts were first published in the June 2005 Statistical Bulletin. This Statistical Supplement is organized as follows: following the Introduction, there is a section describing aspects of the methodology used for compiling the financial accounts and then a section with a short presentation of the main results for 2000-2004, by institutional sector. The last of these years is given greater prominence.
