Payment systems statistics

Banco de Portugal compiles payment systems statistics covering the aggregate interbank operations processed in Portugal, either via clearing (SICOI), or in gross (SPGT/TARGET2), in the different payment instruments available: cheques, credit transfers, direct debits, bills of exchange and Multibanco (Portuguese ATM and POS network). Indicators of the overall settlement system transactions are presented by type of system, indicating quantity and value.

Payment statistics are a key instrument for the payment systems oversight function carried out by central banks. Payment systems cover payment instruments, organisations, operating procedures, operational methods and information and communication systems making it possible to monitor interbank fund transfers.
