Securities statistics
Securities statistics are compiled by Banco de Portugal, in accordance with the provisions laid down in its Organic Law.
These statistics are a particularly important instrument for the analysis of the financial markets within the framework of the economy’s financial investments and financing sources.
Securities statistics are built from the Securities Statistics Integrated System, which includes a database with detailed data on Issues and Portfolios on a “security-by-security” and “entity-by-entity” basis, allowing for the collection, validation and production of such statistical data.
Basic data for this system is obtained from different sources and cover several types of securities, namely debt and equity securities.
Information published covers two segments: the securities issues segment and the securities portfolios segment. Data on securities issues are presented under “Monetary and Financial Statistics”; data on securities portfolios are presented in several domains according to the sector of the holder /investor of the securities.
The detailed methodology on the compilation of Securities Statistics is available under Statistical methodologies and nomenclatures and in the Supplements to the Statistical Bulletin.
Statistical reporting to Banco de Portugal is regulated in the Bank’s Instructions – see Legislation and regulations and the Manual of Procedures to be complied with for reporting purposes – see linked documents. In the case of Securities Portfolios, please consult Instruction No 31/2005 (Securities statistics).
The statistical series in this field can be assessed via BPstat – Statistics online or the Statistical Bulletin.
