Balance of payments statistics

Balance of payments (BOP) statistics are compiled by Banco de Portugal.

These statistics register systematically and for a given period (usually 1 month, 1 quarter or 1 year) the whole economic transactions of Portugal with the Rest of the World, produced according to the methodological principles laid down in the IFM’s Balance of Payments Manual. It covers the following main items: 

  • Current account
    • Goods
    • Services, including Travel and Tourism
    • Income
    • Current transfers, including public current transfers with the EU and emigrants’ and immigrants’ remittances
  • Capital account, including public capital transfers with the EU
  • Financial account
    • Direct investment
    • Portfolio investment
    • Financial derivatives
    • Other investment
    • Reserve assets

Statistical reporting to Banco de Portugal is also regulated in Instructions of the Bank – see Legislation and regulations.
