Euro symbol
The graphic symbol of the euro – € – is similar to the letter E crossed by two horizontal parallel lines. This symbol, which was inspired by the Greek letter “epsilon”, invoking Greece as the cradle of European civilisation, refers to the first letter of the word “Europe”, while the two parallel lines symbolise the internal stability of the currency.
The euro, as the currency of Eurosystem Member States, is divided into 100 sub-units, the so-called “cent(s)”.
